POPULAR PRESIDENT.
MR. H. F. NICOLL'S SERVICES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) ASHBURTON, this day. On the completion of 31 years as president of the Ashbnrton Trotting dub, and 16 years as president of the New Zealand Trotting Conference, Mr. H. F. Nicoll last evening was tendered a complimentary dinner attended by 200 members of the club. High tributes were paid to Mr. Nicoll's administrative ability, and it was pointed out that he holds the unique distinction of being an honorary life member of every trotting club in the Dominion, and has now been appointed joint president of the New Zealand Metropolitan Club. A presentation of a substantial cheque was made, and in reply Mr. Nicoll recalled the fact that he had never been to a trotting meeting before the date in 1906 when a deputation asked him to take charge of the Ashburton Club, which was then in low water. He reviewed the remarkable progress of the club, and stated that £2900 would be given for three classic events by the club next year, which was a record for Australia and New Zealand.
