ABDUCTION OF GIRL.
HORSE TRAINER'S; OFFENCE. THREE MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT. (By- Telegraph.—Own Correspondent,) HAMILTON, Tuesday. "Had there been no favourable report from the probation officer the sentence would have been heavier," stated Mr. J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court, to-day, in sentencing -to three months' imprisonment Cecil John Shaw, aged 45, a single man and a horse trainer, of Cambridge, who was charged j with abducting a girl at Cambridge on June 24. The accused, who appeared on remand, was arrested at Christchurch on August 18, said Senior Sergeant Lambert. The girl in-the case had brought a horse to his stables, and a close association between them developed. After leaving Cambridge they went to Te Kuiti, Wellington, Oamaru, Gore, Invercargill and back to Christchurch, during which time they, lived as man and wife, though the girl travelled as Betty Jones. She was now under the supervision of the child welfare officer, and her case might go before the Children's Court. Mr. A. Hill, for the accused, said that the girl had seen a good' deal of Shaw, apparently with the consent of her parents. Hie never encouraged her to go away, and he had acted decently towards her. The pair were anxious to marry, but the parents withheld consent. If given a chance Shaw was prepared to live the life of a decent citizen.- He had a good standing in the community' prior to the offence. - s. The magistrate added that he misrht ave extended probation-had the accused been younger. -• '----v.- - ~
