AIR VICTORY.
Chinese Claim 34 Victims at Nanking. LOSSES, 20 MACHINES. NANKING, August 23. Evidence shows that the Chinese scored a smashing air victory against Japanese raiders at Nanking. It is officially stated that 34 Japanese aeroplanes were brought down, including 25 heavy bombers. The Chinese losses totalled fewer than 20 machines. One Chinese pilot brought down four Japanese aeroplanes single-handed. An inspection by foreign military and naval officers of the Nanking aerodromes showed that the claims of the Japanese to have destroyed hangars and many aeroplanes were largely baseless. The damage was limited to one training aeroplane at the Chuyang air base.
