HOSPITAL TROUBLE.
DISCORD AT WAIHI.
SUPERINTENDENT'S CHARGES.
REFUTED BY MATRON.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
WAIHI, this day.
An unfortunate situation has arisen in connection with affairs at the Waihi Hospital. For some time past, it is alleged, the necessary unanimity amongst members of the Hospital Board, the administrative officers and members of the nursing staff has been lacking. Recent developments culminated in a series of charges of incompetency by the medical superintendent, Dr. A. Jenkins, against the matron, Mrs. I. Paddock, which were investigated. by 1 the board in committee, with the result that the board decided not to accept the matron's resignation, which had been tendered. At Tuesday night's meeting of the board the matron advised the withdrawal of her resignation and sought the protection of the board "from any further indignities." The matron also asked that any further charges against her should have the board's impartial investigation. The medical superintendent described the matron's statement as "thin as a veil," and said the board had accepted "the whole rigmarole." He considered the board should have given him an opportunity earlier to make an explanation of the allegations made by the matron, which he did not think worth the paper they were written on. After further discussion the board decided to hold a special meeting in committee to go fully into the question, the medical superinjtendent and the matron to be present. Following this decision, the board met again last evening, but after considerable discussion it was deemed wiser to refer the matter to the Health Department and to send on all correspondence in connection with the impasse for the Department's consideration.
