CAR BACK-FIRED.
ENVELOPED IN FLAMES. RADIO EQUIPMENT LOST. (By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) TAIHAPE. Monday. A sedan car driven by Mr. E. Doyle caught lire on the Main North Road two miles from Taihape last evening and was extensively damaged. Radio equipment valued at £30. the property of Nicholls Brothers, Taihape, was destroyed. The equipment included a number of batteries and instruments. The car was proceeding toward Taihape when it skidded into a deep water table, coming to rest at an acute angle on the roadside. While the driver went away to send for another car to get a tow a large quantity of petrol escaped from the tank, which was full at the time of the mishap. When the other ear arrived and was connected with the tow rope Mr. Doyle started the engine of the damaged ear, with the object of facilitating the towing. The engine back-fired, igniting the petrol that had poured out of the tank on to the ground. The car was in flames in an instant. Mr. Doyle just had time to save three wireless sets, though all the radio equipment was lost.
