CITY MISSION.

GOOD STANDARD OF WORK. ARCHBISHOP OX HOUSING. "In the matter of general relief a good standard of work has been maintained this year," said the Rev. Jasper C'alder, city liiiseioner, at the 17th annual meeting of the mission, last night. Mr. C'alder was in the chair and Archbishop Averill was also present. A successful year had l>een completed and mission activities had been maintained with, enthusiasm and energy, said Mr. Calder. In moving the adoption of the report, Archbishop Averill said that much of his sympathy was with the old age pensioners—a class deserving well of the community. This was not a charity, but a right. Tho (Government had taken up the question of housing, but he wae a little disappointed. "I would like to see the (Jovernnient make more provision for large families, and I cannot see how the present houses and the rents are any good to them." his Grace added. "We are all glad there is. less unemployment, though there might be more discrimination in the granting of aid to young people. There is the danger, when better times come, that many charitably-minded people will think there is not the same need to contribute, but there are always some people who are not helped by conditions becoming better." The accounts, of the mission showed a email deficit, but were, in the main, satisfactory. It was pointed out that the mission jumble store was being well patronised, receipts for the year having been £1161 —or nearly £100 per month. "A visit to the crowded shop on pension day." said Mr. Calder. "would convince the most sceptical that the shop does fulfil a genuine need in the city."
