NEW STATE HOUSES.

DEMAND EXCEEDS SUPPLY. EXPERIENCE IN WELLINGTON. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The demand from prospective tenants for the 375 houses being built at Miramar and Lower Hutt under the Government housing scheme is far in excess of the supply. Applications for these dwellings received by the closing date, June 8, totalled 2300, of which nearly l~>oo showed a preference for the 90 Miramar houses. The Parliamentary Under-Secretarv in Charge of Housing." Mr. J. A. Lee. said i . an interview that the demand for Government houses had intensified rather than diminished since the rentals had been announced, and applications were pouring in for inclusion in the list for the next group of Wellington houses. ' The co-operative organisation formed by the Carpenters' Union, he added, was likely to receive its first contract in a few days.
