FAMILIES' ESCAPE.
SWIM IN DARKNESS.
EARLY MORNING ADVENTURE.
HOUSES EVACUATED.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
WHANGAREI, this day.
At 3.30 o'clock this morning two families living in a house on Railway Road, were awakened by the battering of logs against the walls.
The water was then a foot deep in their bedrooms and rising. v
Mr. T. R. Maunsell and Mr. and Mrs. H. Karau were faced with the necessity of swimming in the dark to save themselves and six young children. They eventually found refuge in the Town Hall.
The two families lost all their bedding and clothing, exoept what they wore.
Houses in Poto Avenue were also invaded by the flood waters, but no one had to move out. Householders in Walton Street had to evacuate their premises for a period, and in one house the water was flowing through the side windows.
