RAILWAY LINE BLOCKED

HIGHWAYS UNDER WATER.

Steady rain over the last three days has caused serious flooding in many North Auckland districts. Slips, washouts and flood waters • hare rendered railway traffic beyond Kaukapakapa impossible, and trains from Auckland today ran only as far as that station.

Between Kanohi and Wellsford the line is under water in a number of places, and at Wayby the depth at noon was 7ft.

Roads to the North are also impassable. On the main route it is impossible to proceed beyond Warkworth. At Wayby, between Warkworth and Wellsford, the flood waters across the road have reached a depth of sft, and according to Automobile Association reports they are still rising.

North of Whangarei the main highway to Ohaeawai is blocked. The Mangakahia Valley Road, between Whangarei and Kaikohe, is impassable, and the Dargaville-Opononi-Kaikolie route is under water at Wanna.

The alternative route to Wellsford, by way of Helensville and, up the west coast is flooded in two "places, and the Automobile Association is advising members not to attempt to ggjjflirough that way. The road from WttrlEirortilL'- acrpss to Tauhoa, near the west coast, via Kaipara Flats, is also likely to be flooded. Railway Subsidence. Beyond Wellsford the ( railway line to MaungatUroto is clearj with the exception of a few minor Slips. North of Waiotira Junction a cdfisiderable subsidence has occurred, the track having •<unk deeply for a distance of 60ft. The Ivirikopunui branch line is closed, owing to slips and subsidences. Beyond Whangarei extensive flooding in a number cf localities makes railway traffic impossible. Latent ..reports are to the effeat that steady raui isstill falling. Early irtttie ftfternoonthe Automobile Association reported that the main road from Auckland to Helensyille was blocked by flood water at 'Huapai, and also between Woodhlll and Ohirangi. With the tide rising : tlie Railway Department" considered flooding of the line between here and Helensville likely.
