LOXDOX, June 30.
America, who won the Ryder Cup, the trophy for annual international golf contests between professional players from the United States and Great Britain, retained the cup.
In the second day's play at Southport they won five out of the eight singles, one being all square. This, with their advantage of two games to one (one all square) in the foursomes, gave America easy victory by seven games, to
three.
This was the sixth contest for the cup, and it is the first time that the visiting team had won in their opponent's countrv.
Padgham was so,dismayed with his form that he is undecided whether it is worth while defending the British open title, play in which commences at Carnoustie next Mondav.
Results (United States first): — H. Picard beat A. J. Lacey. 2 and 1. Gene Sarazen beat 1\ Alliss. 1 tip. K. Dudley beat A. Perry. 2 and 1. T. Manero lost to T. H. Cotton, 5 and
B. Xelson lost to D. J. Rees, 3 and 1 S. Snead beat R. Burton, 5 and 4.
R. Gudalil beat A. H. Padgham, 8 and
D. Shute and S. L. King. all square.
_Of the six matches played for the Ryder Cup since its institution in 1927. United States has now won four and Great Britain two. _ The previous contest was won by the United States, on the Redgewood course. Xew Jersey, by 8 to 2 (the other two games being halved). Summarised, the 1937 match resulted: — Won by Woa by „ U.S.A. U.B. Halve*! foursomes Singles .1 2 1 Totals 7 3 2 The American team in the singles differed from that which represented them in the singles only by the replacement of J. Revolta by Snead. Neither Snea.l or Guldahl had previously repr«ented America. Recently Guldah] won the American open, with Snead runner-up.
It was recognised that America has sent probably the strongest combination which had left its shores to contest the cup, and the result etresses further that their players will make a formidable bid for tl»e British open. Two of their number, Sarazen (1932) and Shute (1933) have previously won it. In the British cup team there were the three previous winner* of the title, Cotton (1934), Perry (1933) and Padgham (1936).
