UNEMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS.

Surely tlio time is at hand for a mass mepting <»f Auckland"-; unemployed. There are .-till several thousand men in Auckland existing on the miserable pittance whic-.i the Government expect-; theni to live on. Have they forgotten how the Labour members go vigorously taunted the last Government on the inadequacy of the sustenance rates? Yet those same Labour members refuse to pay the unemployed as much as the Act allows. Have the promise* of cheap homes been forgotten and the abolition of unemployment? The unemployed have been alluded to by the H<>-i. H. T. Armstrong being unemployable. and that they were likely to be a charge on charity for evermore. See a recent issue of the "Standard" for that. He al-o stated that thinirs were almost back to normal. While the unemployed continue to remain passive to these utterances the public will come to believe that all is well. Where are the drastic changes which were to be wrought in our economic system? The £•> a week for everybody? The living wage for pensioners? The welfare of the workers above everything? Mr. .T. A. Lee's chief concern in the housing scheme is that the rents may be too low to allow the speculator to operate. Do the workers and unemployed want any further evidence than that? Do you know that England and Australia's unemployed received a Coronation bonus from their Tory Governments? We have waited patiently for 18 months; are wp going to wait for ever? The unemployed should demand of its leaders that they call a mass meeting immediately and demand that it either give work or sufficient money to live decently. C. BEXXETT.
