DEFECTIVE BRAKES.
USED CAR WEAKNESS.
TWO CASES IX POINT.
It is my desire to draw your attention to tlip danger of putting on the road listed cars equipped with defective emergency brakes, writes "Mug." To obtain a warrant of fitness a car must be able to stop within 40ft when travelling at a rate of 20 m.p.h. Many of these cars just "make the grade," and are passed. An unwary purchaser proceeds to juggle with his own life and the lives of others. I purchased a used car at Christmas. When I applied for mv driving license I was asked by the testing officer to stop the car on a 10 in 1 grade. To our chagrin the old bus ran backwards down Victoria Street Ea»t, and I footed a bill for repairs, even though I had only had possession of the car for three weeks. Quite recently I traded in the car, in a much safer condition, for a later model, and was told that everything was in order. I am quite aware that there is a sucker born every minute, and 1 am quite prepared to be one of them, providing the vendor does not £ell nie a "suicide machine." My latest possession, barely a fortnight in my care, is now the picture of misery in a repair garage. It possesses a warrant of fitness, but after the mechanic had taken the wheels off for examination I shudder brakes W ° r<l " emer S enc y" to the T I-m,M°* PeCti wT pl , lrchaaers of used cars 1 - - >, Sa^ ' at the brakes and lining when you take delivery."
