FROM SPANISH GAOL.
BRITISH JOURNALIST FREED. LONDON, May 21. The British journalist. Mr. Arthur Koestler, who had been detained by the rebels, arrived at Plymouth from Gibraltar. He is suffering from the effects of his long imprisonment at Malaga and Seville.
"I expected daily to be taken out and shot," Mr. Koestler said. "I was not aware that efforts for my release had been undertaken until I was sent to Gibraltar and liberated." He refrained from commenting upon his experiences for fear of endangering others, but he stated that the horrors were unforgettable.
Mr. Koestler expressed his gratitude to the Britisli Government and to all who helped to save his life, especially Lieutenant-Colonel A. E. Beattie, Colonial Secretary at Gibraltar, who negotiated for his release in exchange for another prisoner.
