OVERSEAS LEAGUE.
WEEKLY AT HOME.
Bright autumn flowers and a cosy fire made the lounge of the Overseas League a cheery place yesterday, when the weekly social afternoon was held. "An Afternoon With Dickens" was the programme, and Mrs. Kenneth Gordon was the speaker. Mrs. F. Bauer, convener of the- social committee, presided.
In introducing her subject Mrs. Gordon isaid that Dickens was still a leading influence in the promotion both of Empire unity and international understanding, in that he was the greatest exponent of that touch of nature that makes the whole world kin. To illustrate her talk Mrs. Gordon gave a number of sketches and impersonations, which included Mrs. Crump, from "David Copperfield," and the Artful Dodger, in "Oliver Twist.'' Pianoforte solos were rendered by Mrs. Beniams, and afternoon tea was served by the house committee, represented by' Miss A. Sutton and Miss File.
