Balance of Trade With British
Countries.
COLONIAL DEMANDS. British Official Wireless. RUGBY, April 28. In the course of a speech at Portsmouth Sir Robert Home, M.P. (Con., Glasgow), formerly Chancellor of the Exchequer, referred to Germany's demand for the restoration of her former colonies.
Dealing with the German suggestion that the British Empire had become an exclusive unit, Sir Robert recalled the fact that last year Britain bought £32,000,000 worth of goods from Germany, whereas Germany bought only £21,000,000 worth from Britain.
The British Empire bought £54,000,000 worth e£ goods from Germany against £42,000,000 worth which Germany bought from the Empire.
"There is no country that could better be described as a 'have not' country than Britain," said Sir Robert. "We do not control our Dominions. In obtaining foodstuffs and raw materials from our Dominions we have to pay for them, and Germany can obtain them in exactly the same way and by exactly the same methods."
