COMMUNITY LIGHTING PLAN.

A wide range of subjects was discussed by the Auckland City Council last evening, when a large order paper—made bulkier owing to the postponement of the usual meeting date from the previous Thursday because so many councillors were absent from the city—was dealt with. The Mayor, Mr. Ernest Davis presided. Windmill Road Courts. —An amount is to be placed on the estimates for 19373<} to cover the cost of erecting additional dressing shed accommodation at the Windmill Road courts. Veterans Graves.—Providing the Department of Internal Affairs contributes the sum of £100, the council agreed to arrange to have further attention paid to veterans' graves in the Symonds Street cemetery. Zoo Officer.—On the recommendation of the parks committee, it was decided to appoint Colonel E-. R. Sawer a full time officer with authority to exercise full control over all staff, except the gardeners, employed at the Zoological Park, from April 1 of this year. Admission to Zoo.—lt was decided to reduce, as from April 11, the adult admission charge to the Zoological Park to fid on Wednesdays. _ Community Lighting.—Approval was given to the request of business people in the locality for a community lighting scheme on both sides of Queen Street from Wakefield Street to the Academy Building, provided those concerned collected the costs of installation and maintenance and paid them to the council. West End lennis Courts.-—Provisi«yi will be made in the estimate's for 193738 for til* construction of two additional courts for the West End Lawn Tennis Club. Reporting that an additional area was now available, the superintendent of parks estimated the cost of the new courts at £200. He understood the club was prepared to meet this cost by an increased annual rental. City's Rateable Value.—The city \altier, Mr. P. E. Xotley, reported that the total rateable value of the city, submitted in January as £2,022,310, had been reduced by Assessment Court decisions last month by £6237 to £2,610,070. The Mayor.'congratulated Mr. Aotley on his valuations this year and on the fact that there were so few object ions. Motor Camp facilities.—lt was decided to place the sum of £1960 on next vaprV. estimates for the provision of two buildings containing additional facilities at the motor camp at Western Springs. The estimate given included drainage. Power Board Conditions.—lt was decided to hold in abeyance the execution of agreements in connection with community lighting schemes. On the recommendation of the town clerk, Mr. -T. Moiling, it was agreed that ' the council should continue to lend its support. but that the Auckland Electric Power Board should be requested to waive its condition that the council should be joined a* an intermediary between the associations interested" and the board. Trolley-bus Service.-Permission to run a trolley-bus service round the rectangle formed by Hobson, Victoria Queen and Wvndham Streets, to replace the present petrol busses running between the Holwon Street premises of the Farmers' Trading Companv and Queen Street, was sou-lit by the Auckland Transport Board. The matter was referred Imck to the legal and bv-laws committee.
