ACCUSED BY POPE.
Nazi Violation of Concordat
Charged. ENCYCLICAL ISSUED. LONDON, March 22. The Berlin corre»|>ondent of "The Times" says that in an encyclical read throughout Ger.nany the Pope accuses the Nazis of violating the concordat of 193.3 and encouraging the anti-Christian movement. His Holiness says he will not formally denounce the concordat because his responsibility for the souls entrusted to his care prevents his ignoring the remaining possibilities of an understanding.
The Concordat between the Holy See and Germany was initialled in the Vatican in July, 1933, and ratified in September. The text contained 34 articles, the most important of which were the first, in which Germany guaranteed freedom of conscience, and the 32nd, whereby the Church forbade its priests to take part iu any political activity. Further articles guaranteed to priests the free exercise of their religious office. Catholic officers with permanent residence in Germany had to be German subjects and bishops had to swear allegiance to the Reich.
