SUB-CONTRACTORS' PROBLEMS.
Tt is quite time some alteration was made in builders* treatment of sub-contractors. Many builders in Auckland and elsewhere take contract* and sublet the bricklaying, plumbing, etc. Now the builder is allowed progress-payments on the job as it continues, and naturally he handles the share entitled to the above-mentioned tradesmen, which is quite all right providing he gives them Their portion, but in most ca*es when one calls on him for a draw at the end of the month one is very lucky if he gets £20. winch means that the contractor has the use of the subcontractor's money riant up till he sec- fit t« complete the job." The same method should he followed as j,i j,'l r*uhli- Works jol* that no final payment m made til! all subcontractors are paid, but very often the builder receive* his fi m ,l navment! and hi- -übcontractors are still kept waiting until he sees fit to spare the money to pay for the work. This i* a most unf-ir state of affairs. as many small tradesmen have to keen their merchants waiting for monev through lack of consideration on the part of the builder*. and many are forced into baiikniptcv through no fault of their own.
