TREES IN THE STREETS.
In regard to my protest about the removal of trees at Essex Road, may I point out that Mr. Hartnoll was not fully informed? To suggest that the tree was dangerous is absurd in the extreme. The tree was planted soveral years ago by the late Mr. Gray and formed a welcome shade at the end of the street, which is a blind one. Tt masked the entrance to two properties and formed a most picturesque end to the street. About six months ago a garage was erected! It was difficult to drive into this garage because it was badly placed. However, it was so placed ' and a careful driver could use it; in fact the owner did so for several month*. No doubt it is more convenient for the driver without the tree, but this is no excuse for such vandalism. The tree was amongst the best dozen of its kind in Auckland, and all the residents aerce as to its beauty, and the majority consider that we should be allowed to plant another which would in time take the place of the one destroyed. As to the liability of * the Mount Eden Borough Council. T cannot speak, but it cannot lie more than a remote contingent liability, as there are hundreds of trees in city streets. If you can do anything to restrain this council from further similar action you will earn the -rratitude of all who love trees. E. b. BAMBURY.
