WISE DIET.
COMBINATION OF FOODS. The Progressive Clubs weekly meeting at the Y.W.C.A. was presided over by Mrs. Storey. The speaker for the evening was Dr. G. B. Chapman, who gave a lecture on the correct method of eating, confining his remarks mostly to the Hay diet. He illustrated his talk l>y reference to food charts, and first of all explained the values of the most common foodstuffs. "The very word 'diet,'" he said, "should be deleted from your speech. The usual conception of diet is a. method of gradual starvation. But to follow the Hay diet you merely follow a balanced system of common sense eating, based upon principles. You may still eat practically the same food, but the combination of foodstuffs must be one which will give a proportion of approximately 70 per cent alkaline to 30 per cent acid reaction on being assimilated. Most people combine a high proportion of wrongly combined acid-forming foods, whereas it is the alkaline reserve which is needed to give disease resistance and to combat rheumatism and similar ailments." Dr. Chapman further explained how popular combinations of food such as tomato sandwiches, porridge and milk, were undesirable under the Hay system. He also outlined a scheme for meals which would yield the correct proportions of starch to proteins, and answered many questions from the members. ,
