RETIREMENT OF TREASURER.

There was a reshuffle of the stuff of the Auckland City Council this morning, when following on the retirement las~t evening of the City Treasurer. Mr. Andrew Messer, Mr. T. \\\ M. Ashby, who has l>een assistant town clerk, assumed his new duties in the treasury department in succession to Mr. Messer. At the same time. Mr. 1). 1,. Kobinsoin internal auditor and checking ~tlicer, recently promoted to the post of assistant town rlerk, moved into his new quarters.
The position which Mr. Robinson has relinquished now requires to be tilled. and the town clerk. Mr. .7. Mellinjr. is to report to the council on the advisability of calling for applications by public advertisement for a successor to him. or of recommending for apjK>i7itment a qualified auditor from the corjoration staff or from one of the departments of State.
Mr. Messer, who has resigned on account of ill-health, has been a servant council since 1905, when he joined the treasury department as a clerk. He was chief clerk for seventeen yeans, and was appointed treasurer in 1922.
Mr. Messer was the recipient of several presents on relinquishing office, and received many expressions of good wishes for the future. He was presented with a set of bowls by the treasury staff, and with a ease of gold-mounted pipes, a tobacco jwuch, silver-mounted hair brushes and a walking stick by the heads of departments. The Social Club will also make him the recipient of a tobacco jar.
In making the presentation on l>ehalf of the heads of departments, the town clerk, Mr. J. Moiling, referred to Mr. Messer's long service, with the council, and expressed the regret that was felt at him severing his association with the council. He also wished Mr. Messer every happiness in his retirement.
