THE FIRST DAY.
LIST OF ACCEPTORS. THE THOMPSON HANDICAP. FORM OF CANDIDATES. Considerable interest will bo taken in the autumn meeting of the Wellington Racing Club, which opens next Thursday. for a good many of the candidates will probably be seen at Kllerslie at Easter. The fields are not as large as usual, but , in the majority of the evente there is plenty of material to provide some excellent racing. In awarding Silver Ring 10.6 in the Jhonipson Handicap. Mr. Coyle has given the samo impost as he carried when he was eiKxosstul last year, but the minimum is now 7H> higher. Since then he lias won tour weight-for-age races at Randwick, but lie has not raced since hie return from Australia at Christmas time, laper Slipper has performed brilliantlyover sprint distances this season. He was second to his stable companion. Wild Chase in the Hazlett Cup, one mile, at l>unedin recently, and he would only need to stay on to be troublesome. Friesland ™ n «"™J«I in this race last season to Silver Kirtjr, when carrying 7.1. He was only beaten by a head by Silver Ring, and after hie performance in winning four races in his laet four starts he will not lack for support. Lowenberg hae shown a return to form this season. At Feilding in December he won over seven furlongs with 8.11, and later scored over a* mile and a quarter at Matamata and Stratford with 8.5 and 8.7 respectively. Travenna hae run some good rates up to a mile and a quarter in the South recently, and was second in the Stewards' Handicap, one mile, at Dunedin. while Top Notch wae third. Travenna carried 9.8. so that he is not without prospects. Plato, if produced in the same form ae he was in the spring, would take some beating. In October he won the Shorts Handicap, six furlongs, at Trentham, with 8.2. and at the same fixture Dungarvan only beat him by a head in the Pearce Handicap, one mile, in which he carried 8.11. Going on to Riccarton he ran Trench Fight to a neck in the Jockey Club Handicap, one mile, when carrying 8.9. with Dungarvan, who has 9.(. third. Chief Ranger wae second to Haut Monde in the Anniversary Handicap on the first day of the trentham summer fixture, and won over the same journey on the second day. Haut Monde won the Anniversary Handicap at the same meeting, while Dehham aleo scored over eix and eeven furlongs there, and over a mile at Te Rapa and Te Aroha. He is a most likely lightweight.
