" CHAOTIC STATE."
MARKETING CONDITIONS.
MINISTER OX FRUIT INDUSTRY.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) DUXEDIN, Wednesday.
'"From my study of the question I can only say that in no other fruitgrowing country in the world arc the marketing conditions in such an extraordinary, chaotic state as they arc in New Zealand. ,, said the Minister of Railways, the Hon. D. (i. Sullivan, during his reply to a welcome extended to him at Roxburgh to-day.
'"Of course the fruit industry doe*» not come within my sphere as Minister of Railways, but as head of the Department of Industries and Commerce I have to deal with such matters to some extent, and I know that the fJovernment is greatly interested in your fruit industry here." he paid. '-Without committing the Government in any way, I can say that one of these davs there will have to be a complete and thorough investigation into the manner in which the industry is conducted in the Dominion, wth a view to putting it on a good basis. We shall, I believe, have to conceive ideals on organisation similar tr> those now pertaining in the dairy industry. Fruitgrower*, will have to think about this along those lines, and try to organise on a cu-operative basis. That will do justice to the consumer and at the same time give the grower a chance of a fair return for his labour. The Government has not yet formulated any plans in regard to the industry, but I have given you some of the thoughts that have passed through my mind. Out of the commission on production cost*, combined with good marketing conditions, will came the evolution of a worth while scheme which will be of lasting benefit to the grower, consumer and country in general."
