SUBSIDISED WAGES.

Armstrong, to-day asked that sustenance men should be subsidised to bring their earnings to the level of the basic wage. He replied that half the people of New Zealand would be on sustenance if that were done. "We will provide full employment for as many as possible," he added, "but we are not going to introduce a system ; of relief payment that will pay men better than if they are working."
