THE OPENING DAY.

LIST OF ACCEPTORS

EXCELLENT FIELDS ENGAGED.

CUP AND SPIMNT UK VIEWED. Splendid fields are engaged on the first day of the Te Aroha Jockey Club's annual n:eetin», which opens at Te Aroha on Saturday, and an excellent day's sport should be provided. The chief event of the day. the Herries Memorial, has attracted 25, and class is '''J represented. Flood Tide has been galloping well at Takanini since his return from Wel'in gton. where his best j effort was to finish fourth in the W.R.C. Hand leap, with 90. a similar impost to that he has to carry on Saturday. King Rey won a double over a mile and a quarter at the Auckland summer meeting, and his dead-heat for third in the open sprint at Te Rapa last Saturday shows that he is a very fit horse. He" will be one o: the most fancied. Scotland raced well at the Auckland summer meeting, and also at Wellington, while his success in tile Storey Memorial,at Te Rapa on Saturday will ensure him getting plenty of support. Spiral won the Manawatu Cup at Lnristmas. and is stated to have been gome: well in his track trials at Wanganui recently. Mazir and Master Brierly both disappointed at ie Rapa. Taitoru won the ' Egmont Cup earlier in the month, and is not without prospects. Jonathan has nothto his credit this season, while Tiger Gain failed at Te Rapa. Lagoon ran a good race in the Storey Memorial at Te Rapa, being narrowly beaten by Scotland, while Tybalt also performed well in the same race, being a neck away third. The latter has proved himself capable of going a mile and a half well. Shy met with interference in the same race, and lost his rider v On the next day he ran third in the Vercoe Handicap, one mile, and he is more than a possibility. Kelly was placed both days at Takapuna over a mile and a quarter, but has not raced since. He has been going along satisfactorily in the interim. Of the others Respectful. Tout Ie Monde, Debham, if started, and Gay Broney seem the best. Just now King Rev, Scotland, Flood Tide, Spiral, Tybalt, Shy and Kelly may be in favour. The Waihou Handicap. Impasto. who is at the head of the Waihou Handicap, made a fairly good showing to the straight in the President's Handicap, six furlongs, at Te Rapa on Saturday, finishing fifth, while in the Vercoe Handicap, one mile, on the second day, he led the field to the home turn, tiring over the final furlong. However, he has previously won on this course. was slow away in the President s Handicap at the same fixture, but got up to be sixth, and on the second day was runner-up to Respectful in the Vercoe Handicap, one mile. He would only need to jump away to be difficult to beat. Diatomous has not raced for some time, while Mata Hari failed badly at Te Rapa. Galilee has not raced since the holidays, but is stated to be going well at Te Awamutu. Golden Sheila deadheated for third place at Te Rapa on Saturday, and should be improved. Whirling won the sprint on each day of the Te Rapa meeting in most convincing style, and he should again be hard to beat despite his rise in weight. Deficit, who is on the minimum, was second to Whirling each day, and should again be troublesome. Karl was third at Woodville last Saturday, while of the others Prince Acre appears the best. At this stage Golden Sheila, Whirling, Deficit, Impasto, Karl and Triune may appeal most. The acceptances are:— 11.50—RUAKAKA HURDLES of £250. About one mile and a half.
