STURGES PARK SUPPLIES.
DISCUSSION AT OTAHUHU
At the meeting of the Otahuhu Borough Council on Monday, Mr. TV. Cowper, a meml>er of the parks committee, suggested that the council should debit the road maintenance fund with a royalty charge of '.?/ for every yard of scoria taken from Stirpes Tark. and that the money should be credited to the park account. Mr. Cowper pointed out that dressing sheds and other conveniences were urgently required in the park, and said the money that would be gained could be used for that purpose. Under the existing arrangement the works committee was petting the benefit of free road filling and he estimated that £1000 would not cover the value of spoil used on the roads in the past. The Mayor, Mr. C. R. Petrie. M.P., said that it was rather late to discuss the matter, but it was certain that if the suggested course was adopted progress would be stopped as it would mean that maintenance money would l>e diverted to the park. As for dressing sheds and other conveniences the council hoped to provide these at an early date. He said that it was admitted that muoh of the roading work in the Tamaki Estate and other localities would not have been done had it not been for the park. In supporting Mr. Cowper's suggestion. Mr. F. \V. Grey, chairman of the parks committee, said that he welcomed the Mayor's la«t statement as many ratepayers we r e of the impression that the park was costing a lot of money with very little return. After discussion the Mayor suggested that no action be taken, and this course was agreed to, the Mayor adding that they would get a lot of undesirable publicity out cf the discussion.
