WINE AFTER HOURS.
OFFENDER FINED €15.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) PUKEKOHE, Tuesday. Three charges were preferred against a le Kiiuwhuta wine manufacturer, Albert Edward Andrew Watson (Mr. A. I'. King), when he appeared before Mr. I*. U. Levien, S.M., in the l'ukekohe Court to-day. Watson was charged with opening liis premises for the sale of wine out of hours, with soiling liquor when his premise* were required to be closed, and witli selling wine of his own manufacture in u quantity of less than two gal-. lons to Tony Kaui. Defendant pleaded not guilty. Tony Kaui said that on December 20 he went to Te Kauwhata, leaving l'ukekohe al>oiit 11 o'clock in the evening. He was accompanied by five Maoris. He went to Watson's with a jar and woke him up, telling him that he wanted come wine. He purchased a gallon of wine and four bottlca from Watson, paying 18/. Mr. Kin<y said, that on. the night in question defendant had been away and arrived home about 2 o'clock, going straight to bed. The next niprht he went to bed early and was not disturbed by any callers. Watson had given credit to Kaui, and finally had refused to supply him. On account of this Kaui might have had some grudge against him. When defendant gave his statement to the police he had confuted the date with another occasion shortly j before when ho had supplied Kaui. The magistrate said that he could not I doubt the evidence for the prosecution. | Defendant was convicted and fined £15 and £2 2/ costs on the first charge, the [remaining two charges being withdrawn.
