HURRIED RETURN.

MATAI'S RUSH TO PORT. CHIEF ENGINEER TLL. Returning hurriedly from Kawau last night, the Government steaiter Matai, which had left early yesterday afternoon on her routine visit to northern lighthouses, landed the chief engineer, Mr. W. Peterson, who had been taken ill. The Matai berthed shortly after 11.30 p.m. at the Central wharf, where Mr. Peterson was landed, to be taken to a private home by taxi. The steamer sailed again 40 minutes after midnight for Moke Hinau, which is the first call on her schedule. Lord and Lady Galway and their family are aboard the vessel for a holiday cruise.
