TROUBLE ON SHIP.

SCUFFLE AND FALL. STEVEDORE SERIOUSLY HURT FIREMAN TTNDEB ARREST. Injured severely about the head when he fell down a hold during a ecufflc on board the Port Townsville at seven o'clock last evening, Mr. Edward Curtis, a married man, aged 00, of 29a, Gibraltar Crescent, Parnell, is at present lying in the Auckland Hospital in a serious condition. In falling Mr. Curtis struck his head on the dunnage, crashed through it, and fell a distance of ten feet to the floor of the hold. When lifted on to the deck he was unconscious. He was taken to the hospital in a St. John ambulance. Mr. Curtis is a gang foreman employed by the Auckland .Stevedore Company. As a. result of inquiries, Detective Brown arrested a man in connection with the case late last night. Fireman Before Court. This morning James Francis Loftus, aged -10, described on the charge sheet as a fireman, appeared in the Police Court before Messrs. A. J. Stratford and Angus Donaldson, J.P.'s, charged with assaulting Edward Curtis On the application of DetectiveSergeant Mcllugh the charge of common assault was amended. Loftus, who limped into the dock on a walking stick, was then chariod that with intent to do grievous bodily harm to Edward Curtis, he did actual bodily harm to Curtis. Mr. McHugh applied for a remand until February S. Mr. R. A. Singer, appearing for accused, said Loftus had suffered an injury, and he asked that bail be allowed, as accused required immediate treatment. "I have been instructed to oppose bail," said Detective-Sergeant McHugli. "Curtis is in a serious condition. Accused can get proper treatment in the prison." Counsel said ho thought it would be a humane thins to allow Loftus bail, at least until 'Monday. Loftus could get substantial bail! There was no chance of him leaving Auckland. The presiding justices granted the remand, but refused the application for bail.
