FREEZING CHARGES.
INVESTIGATION IN PROGRESS. MINISTER KEEPS PROMISE. (By Tclcgrnph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, tliis day. A complete investigation of the costs of freezing nnd handling of meat for export by the meat freezing works of tho Dominion is in progress, having started some time ago. It bears no relation to the recent announcement of the rise in charges due to the 3d per hour increase payable to the workers as from January 1.
The matter lirst came under public notice when a South Island member questioned the Minister of Agriculture in Parliament regarding the charges for handling export stock, the suggestion being made that owing to higher charges in the South Island the produce, particularly lamb, returned less per pound to the producer than comparable lamb killed and exported from North Island works. The Hon. W. Lee Martin undertook to see that the matter was investigated in the recess, and be set up a committee comprising officers of the Department of Agriculture and the Meat Producers' Board, following a conference of the interested parties.
Freezing works proprietors .unci directors were approached, and the committee secured tlie fullest co-operation from them, the freeziiiß works interests assistfull Tirogrcss. '
