TRAFFIC TALLY.

AUCKLAND TFODS. SL'IiVKY AT MAIX POINTS. To ascertain the general trend and distribution of vehicular traffic, the annual traffic tally is now being carried out by the city engineer's department. Known as the skeleton survey, the tally main business area, with a few points at some of the more important outlying intersections.

Ti-aflic tally records are analysed every year, and are valuable for comparative purposes when a comprehensive survey is made every'five years. The present tally is Ihmiij- carried out at 17 points'in or near the main business area and at nine other points in the outer area. Eight men supplied by tlie Auckland Placement Ollice are engaged in the tullv.

Tallies are falcon for two days at each point, and the mean of the figures secured is taken as a fair indication of the volume of traffic at that point. The volume, direction and classification of all road vehicles is recorded. Motor, horse-drawn vehicles, trains, bicycles and barrows are included in the tally.

Important outlying points under observation are the Eden Terrace-Dominion Road junction, the approaches to the Devonport and Birkenhead ferry landtraflie to I'ainell and some of the eastern suburbs, the rlroadway-Remuera Road intersection, Karangahapo Road-Pon-sonny Road corner and the intersection of Bright and Niger Streets, on the main connecting route between Grey Lynn and Kingsland.

The extension of Upper Queen Street to Newton Road and the improvement of Exmouth Street to give a better outlet from the city to Eden Terrace was one result of previous surveys. This route is now being chocked to see how the traffic compares with that over thet narrow etreete over which it previously passed.
