COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE.

MONEY TAKEN FROM SAFES

A youth of 18, Noel Martin, engineer's labourer, pleaded guilty in the Police Court this morning, before Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., to two* charges of breaking and entering and theft.

The charges were that on January 8' he broke and entered, by night, the counting house of J. Shaw Company, Limited, Fanshawe Street, and stole £10 18/, and that on January 15 he broke and entered the counting * house of J. Wild ridge and Sinclair Company (N.Z.), Limited, and stole £13 9/10. Detective J. Hunt produced statements jn which accused said that he had been out of employment for six weeks, and was in arrears with his board.. At 8.10 p.m. on January 8 he climbed the fence at the rear of Shaw's premise*, and gained entrance to the foundry through an open window. He forced a panel on the office dodr, and, opening the «afe with a key, took from a cash box £10 18/, which he had since spent. He left i the premises by the back door, closing it after him.

On January 15, at 9.30 p.m., said Martin, he went to Wildridge'e premises and took a ladder from the yard. He placed the ladder against the lean-to of the office, climbed on to the roof, and opened a window upstairs. Entering the office, he located the eafe key, and took ihe cash box, in which he found £13 9/10. He left everything in order, and spent the money to pay his board. * Martin pleaded guilty to the charges, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
