CLEVER LEY WITH R.V. TEAM. SATURDAY'S GAMES REVIEWEDThe second round of the Auckland City and Suburban championship on Saturday provided any amount of good play at the Domain, even though two of the three pitches presented difficulties for the teams concerned. A" cry keen contests seem to be in store between Ponsonby ;ind Green Lane and between R.V. and Roskill. while compensation for Brixton's heavy defeat by Mumikau lies in the fact that the latter eleven now becomes a stronger challenger to the current leaders, R.V.
Hebden top-scored for Ponsnoby with 57 runs against Green Lane. He gave several chances, but his display was a very heady one in the circumstances. Shepherd (2(5) and Robertshaw (26) got valuable runs at the intermediate stage, while the "tail" effort by Young 121) and Lonergan (19) also was impressive, so that the total of 222 on a late declining wicket was quite respectable, in spite of good bowling by Tomlinson (four for 34) for Green Lane who, with '20 runs
on the board, and Kerr still in, have a chance to make it a really good game. R.V. seemed well satisfied to get a total of 218 runs and compel Mount Roskil to make a start with a reply which cost a wicket for 20 runs, but if the suburban eleven gets nicely set upon resumption it can be relied upon to spring a surprise on the opposition, good and all as is R.V.'s attack. Taking six R.V. wickets for 48 rune, Yates proved on Saturday that he is a slow bowler of class, but he appears to be a type not to be used too much. Bambury gave a tip-top exhibition of batting for R-V. to compile the beet score of 80 runs, but for live execution Finlayson (42) and the recruit, Cleverley (35), are to be commended. Buoyant hitting is what the public relish. Some interest also centred in the trunding of Cleverley. who has changed over from Ponsonby in the A.C.A. competition, but his fast deliveries were not so effective for a start.
While Manukau had an easy victory over Brixton by an innings and a run, it can be accepted that the showing of the losers was a bit too bad to be a true index to their- calibre. As previously stated the unusually bad state of the pitch had a lot to do with the spoiling of this contest. Manukau had scored 71 for seven wickets when they declared, two players having reached double figures.
