NORWEGIAN SHIP.
REBEL GUNBOAT'S - CAPTURE.
(Received 9.30 a.m.) GIBRALTAR, January 8. The Norwegian steamer Ibis was inteicepted in the Straits by a rebel gunboat and compelled to proceed" to Algeciras, where her cargo and papers were inspected. The time limit fixed by Germany for the release of the passenger and part of the cargo taken from the freighter Palos expired yesterday without an answer from the Valencia Government. A German Foreign Office spokesman said that apparently the Nazi ultimatum was being ignored, and added: "That settles that for what it is worth.'' He said also:
German reprisals will be much more striking next time."
Germany has handed over the captured Loyalist ships Aragon and Marta Junquera to General Franco, states a Berlin official announcement. The incident is considered closed with the handing over of the vessels to the insurgents.
The Valencia (Loyalist) Government has offered to submit to arbitration, bv the International Non-intervention Committee, the question of whether the seized portion of the Palos' cargo was war material. If the decision goes against the Government, it is willing to return the cargo to Germany. A Berlin message announced that the crews of the Arajton and Marta Junquera will be returned to Spain after disposal of the ships.
'PLANES FOR SPAIN.
MEXICO TO SEND SUPPLIES
MEXICO CITY, January 8.
Mexico will permit shipment to Spain of all American aeroplanes now in Mexico for that purpose, in addition to 47 machines for which the United States Government issued a permit, if aeroplanes—now reported to be within an hour's flying time of the Mexican border—enter the couhtry before the United States cancels the permit, according to an announcement by the Acting-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Senor Ernesto Hidalgo.
This action, a reversal of that previously adopted, is the result of tlio fact that the Lnited States Government permitted Mr. Cuse's shipment to clear the country, and that the joint resolution of Congress barring shipments is still unsigned by the Vice-President, Mr. Garner, owing to the failure of the Senate to authorise him to sign it during the recess from Wednesday to Friday because of an oversight. This make's the resolution ineffective.
