CORNWELL CUP.
TROPHY PRESENTED.
PLIMMERTON PRAISED.
" WELL-DESERVXE VICTORY." (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") TAURANGA, this day. The Cornwell Cup was presented yesterday afternoon to the Plimmerton crew, Kenneth and Melville Watson, twin brothers, by Mr. A. J. Mirrielees, patron of the Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club, in the presence of a big gathering of visitors, members of the club, and others interested in the contest. Mr. T. F. Connor, commodore of the club, before asking Mr. Mirrielees to present the cup, read a sheaf of telegrams congratulating Plimmerton's representatives on their win, and extended his own club's good wishes.
Mr. Mirrielees said the Watson brothers were particularly fortunate in winning the cup this year, as it was their fourth and last time in the contest; the age limit of 19 barring them in the , future. They had sailed keen races, and well deserved their victory. It was satisfactory to know that the cup was going to Plimmerton, where it had not been before, and it should help to keep alive the British love of such heroism as that displayed by young Jack C'ornwell. He hoped that Tauranga would go to Plimmerton next year and bring the trophy back with them, as the visitors had all enjoyed the contest, which had been carried out without ar protest or serious mishap, the very best of good feelings prevailing. The Plimmerton crew had to do most of their sailing in the open sea, and it had been good training. Mr. Mirrielees also presented the New Zealand Monotype Champion Cup to Mr. Graham Carter, of Tauranga, who won the race earlier in the day. The trophy won by Mr. Derek Reid, representing Auckland, in the race for delegates, was also presented. The Cornwell Cup winners were also presented with gold medals and badges. All recipients briefly acknowledged their prizes, cheers being given for the visiting crews and for the Tauranga Club and residents. Mr. A. Round, of Christchurch, returned thanks on behalf of Southern crews and delegates for Tauranga's hospitality, while Mr. Derek Reid spoke on. behalf of the North Island crews.
