AUCKLAND WINNERS.
FOURTEEN QUALIFIED. There are always surprises in bowling, but Auckland will be well satisfied with the success o£ their representatives yesterday, with fourteen qualifying to continue play to-day ,on the two-life system, although these players are only surviving as one-lifers. The whole province will congratulate South Auckland, in having Evans and Loveridge going forward as two-lifers, besides Gamble, Davis, McGonagle and Pomeroy as one-lifers. These are all playing five rounds to-day, if the weather permits. The survival of G. B. Evans (Hamilton), with two lives, means that in the fifth round he defeated J. M. Brackenridge (Lyall Bay), winner of the champion of champions of the Wellington Centre for the last three years. In the same section was A. Phillips, champion of champions of the Marlborough Centre for the last three years, and he failed to qualify at all. This means that Leach (Carlton) defeated him in the fourth round. Spectators at the Wellington greens today will probably give most attention to tfie former Dominion champions who got through yesterday's plav without a loss, W. Foster (Caledonian}, the winner of 1926, J. D. Best (Otago) 1925, and W. Carswell (Taieri) 1924, but they will not overlook Frank Livingstone (Onehunga), the present champion, nor Maxwell Walker (Auckland), the champion of three previous tournaments, even though these latter start with only one life, for thenstyle of play always attracts attention. Consistency is shown by other Auckland players who survived yesterday's five rounds, notably G. A. Deare (Carlton), a former rink champion, W. Bremner, rink champion twice, and H. A. Robertson (Onehunga), in the Australian championship of 1931. It is not often that a major victory comes to Glen Eden, but this time the' club is put into the limelight by the success of their former champion and president, Frank Firth, although playing in Ponsonby colours in this tournament. Remuera is well represented by L. L. Macey and J. Eaves. J. H. Mingins (Epsom), a former champion of that club, and also of Remuera. although playing for Ponsonby in this tournament, lost his first game to R. J. Aitcheson (Caledonia), but his four subsequent successor; included the defeat of F. J. Redpath _ (Linwood), a member of the champion rink three years ago. This will raise the hopes of those who were disappointed with his work in the Christmas tournament, where hi* rink failed to qualify. EPSOM RINKS POSTPONED. Owing to bad weather the full-rink tournament at the Epsom green has been postponed till Tuesday, January 12.
