JACK LUMSDAINE'S VISIT. PROGRESS IN BROADCASTING. „ H . I >>ix years ago broadcasting in New Zealand was i„ ito i nfancy> but are enormous possibilities to-day in a government-controlled network without wIET was"; r! ai<l Mr ' . Jack Lumsdaine, broadcasts from Station 2GB Sydney and h e al so acts as commentator for Fox Movietone News. It is not generally known that he was responsible for the creation of that amusing eash.reJack. He has been to New £aland before with the Fuller-Hayward Company, and also under contract to Mr. Beaumont Smith's Regent Theatre circuit but for the past five years he has been heard from 2GB {says the Dominion"). New Zealand broadcasting has gone ahead by leaps and bounds during the past six years, Mr. Lumsdaine said. Australian artists such as Gladys Moncrieff, Senia Chostiakoff and Clem Williams had all been very happy in the Dominion, and had proved deservedly popular with New Zealand listeners. He had himself written a special number entitled "Where the Shannon Flows Down to the Sea" for Gladys Moncrieff, who had sung it with marked success on her last tour. "Broadcasting in Australia is going from success to success," Mr. Lumsdaine said. "Some of the most popular forms of entertainment are transcriptions and serials, but we are beginning to realise that though they are excellent, listeners would prefer to hear Australian rather than American voices. At 2GB we have our own recording plant, and we are now making transcriptions and plays more to suit Australian listeners."
