WORK ON THE GRASS

WILLIE DERBY AND LUCKY LOVE. Tile grass track, with the poles 3*>ft out, was available for fa6t work at Epsom this morning. The going was in excellent order. Several smart efforts were recorded. Gay Sister and Bolinda King (both unhoppled) "were sent a mile and a half. Gay Sister broke crossing the top the last time and Bolinda King beat her home in 3.50, the last half mile occupying 1.13. Gay Sister paced with plenty of freedom when she was going smoothly. Amathas was allotted a mile and completed his task in 2.36 after running the rirst half in 1.21. Lucky Love and Willie Derby jumped away from the mile and a half post, the former setting the pace to reach the mile in 2.35. Willie Derby moved up smartly at this stage and, finishing strongly, beat his companion by a length in 3.40, the filial four furlongs taking 1.6. Lucky Love registered 3.41 3-5. Both horses paced in great style and are in excellent fettle. Win Huon trotted solidly in an essay over a mile and a half, which he completed in 3.40. He ran the last half mile in 1.16 and w-as staying on fairly well.

The Nelson Bingen mare in J. Turner's stable and Pink Lady went away smartly from the mile and a quarter post and were practically on terms at the finish in 3.8 4-5, the unnamed mare, who began in front, taking 3.11.

Princess Onyx fairly revelled in useful work on the dirt track and is in nice condition to undergo a solid preparation.

Munga Tangi, Reception, Young Rodney and Bismuth went away in that order for a run over two miles. The first-named was in front throughout and stayed on to register 4.41 3-5 and the last half mile in 1.8. Reception trotted very freelv to record 4.42 and is a good prospect for a race at the Auckland meeting. Bismuth, after losing a lot of ground in the early stages owing to slipping, was up with them at the finish and ran 4.41, while Young Rodney, who made a break, took 4.41 3-5. after trotting his last half mile in 1.9.

Gblden Maid pleased by the effortless manner in which she covered a mile and a half in 3.45 3-5 and was not unduly bustled to run her last half mile in 1.14 3-5. This mare is improving all the time. Grand Triumph made a couple of breaks while compassing two miles in 5.9. He sprinted his final four furlongs in 1.17.

Mr. Potts and Terraplane were associated over a mile and a quarter, Terraplane being in front at the post in 3.26 2-5, the last half mile taking 1.16 2-5. Mr. Totts was inclined to 6kip on the bends. Baron Grand went off 9s in front of Audo Patch from the two-mile post, but they were only going easily over the first bit and Audo Patch was soon up with him. Baron Grand led past the mile and a half in 3.56 and the speed was then increased, the pacer finishing in front in 5.7 3-5, the last half mile taking 1.11 3-5. Audo Patch showed his usual dash to record 5.0, after running the final half mile in 1.10.

Silver Watch and Forest Jewel went awav from the mile and a half post and after going a quarter were joined by Kewpie's Crest and Worthy Song. Silver Watch was soon in charge and although Kewpie's Crest finished well he failed to catch the grey, who covered the full distance in 3.38 and the last half mile in 1.9 2-5. Kewpie's Crest worked well to run the mile and a quarter in 2.58, while Worthy Song occupied 3.1. Forest Jewel broke and lost ground crossing the top and was timed to cover her section in 3.43.

Indiana was timed to cover the la«t half mile of her work in 1.20, but was never at top. She is shaping up well. Kewpie's Bingen led Luvan de Oro throughout a mile and a quarter in 3.21, the last half mile taking 1.12 3-5. Both novices are on the improve. Star Pronto showed his usual dash in completing a mile and a half in 3 3 2-5. He came home in great style to cover the last half mile in 1.7 2-5. The black pacer has never looked better.

Mountain Sun, after going half a mile, was joined at the mile and a half post by Charteris Bay, the former leading all the way to cover his two miles in 5.6 2-5 and the last half mile in 1.11 2-5. Chartens Bay registered 3.41 for his section and put plenty of dash into his task. Roman Chief was staying on solidly at tile conclusion of a mile and a quarter, run in 2.59, traversing his last half mile in 1.9 This novice appears to have come on a lot of late.

Gala Day just shaded Native Cole at the end of a mile and a half in 3.44, the last half mile taking 1.12. Bedford was not at top at any stage • oP 1 a which he completed in 3.50, while Gold Pointer Sprinted the Jast naif mile of a mile and a quarter in 1.10.
