PIHA RESCUES.

FIVE BATHERS ASSISTED

SURF CLUB'S. EFFORTS

A very strong set of current at low tide at Piha is dangerous to even the strongest swimmers, and though the beach was flagged both yesterday and on Sunday, several bathers found themselves in difficulty, and members of the Piha Surf Club made several saves. On Sunday two women were swept into the danger area at the same time. One "was assisted by two members of the Surf Club, Messrs. J. A. Stubbs and H. C. Sidford, and nearby bathers, while the second woman was helped out of danger bv another member of the Surf Club, Mr. W. M. Milliken.

Yesterday two girls and a man were in difficulties in the same place, in the deep water near Lion Rock, and were rescued by members of the patrol. The man was carried out into the danger area on a surf board, and one of the girls was floating on a rubber mattress "when she was carried swiftly out by the current.

The captain of the Siirf Club, Mr. Sidford, stated yesterday that if swimmers paid attention to the flags there would be *110 question whatever of their getting into danger. It is only when people disregard the flags that they are caught in the strong current, and as a result members of the patrol had actually to be stationed on a bank running out from the beach to warn people from going outside the safety area."
