ST. STEPHEN'S SCHOOL.
AWARDS TO MAORI YOUTHS. ADDRESS BY HEADMASTER. (From Our Own Correspondent.) PUKEKOHE, Monday. "The school has never ceased to function as an education institution, although the typo of education throughout the years has varied considerably," said the headmaster, Mr. W. C. Morris, at the eightysixth anMual break-up of St. Stephen's School, Bombay, yesterday.
Mr. Morris added that the stressing of tlio academic side had taken place only in the last 40 or 50 years, but more especially in the last ten years. However. St. Stephen's had always been noted for the excellence of its physical, industrial and religious training. He considered, with some degree of certainty, that for the majority of the Maori pupils, physical, industrial and religioys training were of more value to them for living the full lite, than instruction on the academic side. Mr. Morris said he was optimistic enough to think that the number of pupils would be larger next year, but it was difficult to estimate the effects of recent legislation on the youth of to-day. If it had the effect of decreasing the attendance of pupils in post-primary schools it would he a very serious matter.
During the year, said Mr. Morris, three conferences dealing with the education of the Maori were held. Many of the matters brought forward were already being dealt with in a practical manner by the Government Departments concerned, and the future should see a general betterment of the condition of the Maori.
