STRANDED BY STRIKE.
New Zealanders on U.S. Pacific Coast Worried. SETTLEMENT IMPENDING? SAN" FRANCISCO, December 13. Mr. Frank Goldberg, governing director of the Goldberg advertising Agency, of Sydney, who has been appointed honorary chairman of the Australians and New Zealanders stranded on the Pacific Coast owing to the shipping strike, has indicated that he would telegraph to the British Embassy at Washington and to Canberra asking that steps be taken to have a ship released to* repatriate nationals. He estimates that 300 nationals are in California and 300 in Canada, many of whom arc lacking funds. It is understood that Mr. Goldberg's application to President Roosevelt on November 19 resulted in a reference to the Assistant Secretary of Labour, Mr. E. F. McGrady, who, according to the Secretary of the Department, Miss Frances Perkins, lias full authority for the necessary mediation with the strikers. Mr. Goldberg said lie was conferring with Mr. McGrady. The union leader, Harry Bridges, had not replied to a telegram on November 10 asking for assistance, said Mr. Goldberg. In spite of a reported statement by Harry Bridges, that if the shipowner are not prepared to negotiate for pea-." by December 20 he will call out the Ion;shoremen, the feeling in America per sists that settlement of the maritime strike is impending.
