A FAMOUS SHIP.
THE OLD DISCOVERY.
EFFORTS TO SAVE THE VESSEL.
One matter of great interest to Captain R. G. England, now visiting Christchurch, is the fate of the famous olcl exploration ship Discovery. Captain England, who was associated with both the Scott and Shaekleton expeditions, said that before lie left England an offer had been made for the ship by a group headed by Commander L. Bernacclii. He had not heard snce whether it had been accepted.
Commander Bernacclii was anxious to ensure that the ship would not be broken up but that she should be kept afloat as an inspiration to the younger generation. The Discovery has been tied up since lf>3l when she returned with Sir Douglas Mawson's party, under the command of Captain Davis. The Discovery was still in perfect condition although she had been tied up m the East India Dock for many years.
It was. intended, if the offer to purchase her were accepted, to nse her partially as a training ship and it was a possibility that she would visit Australia and New Zealand.
