CHALLENGE TO POLICE TEAMSTER IN TROUBLE. DETECTIVE'S VIGII/ANCE. A teamster, John James Ross, aged 50, entered the dock in the Police Court this morning to plead guilty to two charges of stealing women's clothing valued at £15 and £10 on December 2. His appearance in Court was due to the vigilance of Detective A. Gillum. In evidence Detective Gillum said lie was in Queen Street at 5.20 p.m. on December 2, when he saw accused go behind a hoarding, carrying a larg€ brown paper parcel, and accosted him as he came away. Ross did not then have the parcel. Questioned as to what he had clone with it, Ross told witness to find out. He later 6aid the parcel contained clothing belonging to his wife, but refused to say where Lis wife lived, When asked what his name Was, Ross again said "Find out." , Ross was taken to a second-hand dealer's ehop and witness asked the dealer to telephone th«; police to send a car. While in the shop witness saw Ross throw something away behind the counter. He looked and found, two unemployment levy books made out in the name of John James Ross. Ross then said he would plead guilty. He was taken to the letective oflice and arrested on the charges. The second-hand dealer told witness that Ross had tried to sell the clothing. Cross-examined, by; Mr. K. C.- Aekins, ,vho appeared for Ross, Detective Gillum said Ross' was drunk enough to arrest >n a drunkenness charge at the time. His appearance suggested that he had jeen drinking for some time. Pleading guilty to both counts, Ross vas commjtted to the Supreme Court or sentence.
