PEAS FOR LATE SUPPLIES.
Early and second early peas will be relied on for future sowings. To enable the plants from late sowings to withstand drought and resist mildew, the bottom of the trenches is broken up and manure or whatever else of a like nature is available, mixed with the soil, the whole being trodden firm after filling in the trench. Give a good watering before sowing the seeds, well apart and about 3in deep. Mulching with litter, grass mowings, etc., retains soil moisture, as also does maintaining a fine loose surface by frequent hoeings. Tall peas, needing extra support in places to keep the haulm from falling about, can be made secure by string tied to the stakes previously inserted, if others are not available.
