STABLE AND TRACK NOTES.

SCORED IMPRESSIVELY. The win recorded by Fleetwind in the Cautley Handicap on the second day of the Takapuna meeting was impressive, as she outstayed the rest of the field over the final stages. It was her first success tor two seasons, and she handled the sticky going in good style. Now that I' leetwind has shown winning form she may not be long in repeating the performnce, though she does not reveal her best form during the summer months. A PROMISING' NOVICE. Although beaten in the Melrose Handicap, when making his first appearance with the colours up, Jack Tar ran a good race. He began well, and Bronzcttc was the only horse in front of him at the home turn, but he headed her over the filial stages and looked the winner, when I'ox Motli got up to beat him by a head. Jack Tar is not a very robust gelding, though his speed is undoubted, and he is likely to do better when he has had more expenence.

GOING WAS AGAINST HIM. Track conditions were against Big Dook at Ellersiie, consequently he was not able to do himself justice. However, no fault could be found with his condition, and his turn will come when the ground gets hard again. This horse is a capable galloper up to a mile and a quarter, and trom now on should have the going to his liking. Big Dook will remain at Ellersiie; tor the Auckland Racing Club's summer meeting, where he will have plenty of opportunities to make a return to the winning list.

RAILWAY HANDICAP CANDIDATE. Impasto won well at the recent Te Rapa meeting, and he was produced in hue order by H. Eva when he went out to contest the Ngataringa Handicap at Ellerslie on Monday. He was first out and was never afterwards headed, carrying Ins. J./ to victory like a good horse. Impasto has plenty of pace, and he has furnished into a ver> solid gelding, who should again be seen to advantage in sprint events during the next few weeks. Impasto is engaged in the Railway Handicap at the Auckland summei meeting.

A LIKELY IMPROVER. Highborn, a two-year-old colt by Baralong from Nobility, hail only had a couple of starts prior to contesting the Kakino Handicap at Ellerslic on Monday. He lumped away well and was one of the first into the straight, but the distance was just • a bit too far for him and he had to be ; content with third place. Highborn is a fine looking colt, who should develop into ! a splendid type of three-year-old, and lie ; should do,his owner, Dr. W. C. King, good ' service. Highborn is trained by U. J. ' Burgess at Takanini. WON EACH DAY. 1 Lap Up raced consistently at the Taka- ; puna meeting during the weelt-cnd, win- • ning both hurdle races and incidentally ■ paying good prices. He was never fai away in the Tiri Hurdles on Saturday, and once over the last obstacle soon headed Curlew, ' to win by a neck. On Monday lie nas ' well back early, but before half the journey had been covered he moved up into a ! handy position and outstayed the opposition , in the run home. Lap Up should reward Ins trainer, W. Patterson, with another 1 win before the season is much further J advanced. WELL-BRED MAIDEN. Despite the fact that King Neptune was 1 having his initial outing in public in the • Vauxhall Handicap at Ellerslie on Monday, ' strong support was forthcoming for lnm. He was capably ridden by H. Wiggins and ■ was in the firing line all the way, but was ■ unable to hold off Valamito over the last 1 ljalf furlong, and went under by a length, i lit was an encouraging performance for a > beginner and more is sure to be heard of : this three-year-old. By Tidal from Queen March, there is a lot to - commend King Neptune oil the score of breeding, and he should not take long to lose his maiden status. ONLY STARTED ONCE. Merry Lap was only produced on the second day of the Takapuna meeting, but lie found another Takiriini-trained jumper in Lap Up just a bit too good for him in the Kawau Hurdles on Monday. Merry Lap was about fourth when the field settled down, and entering the straight ran up second. He stayed on fairly well, but Lap Up held him safely. After his success at the Auckland spring meeting Merry Lap was taken to the Wellington spring fixture, but failed to do any good. However, lie ran a good race at the Waikato spring meeting, when he finished second to Tudor. A BRILLIANT COLT. The Juvenile Stakes; run at Feilding on Saturday, revealed one of the most impressive - two-year-old winners so far this season. This was Smoke Screen, by Limond from Curtain, a full-brother to Gladswood, Loud Applause and Pelmet. Smoke Screen was purchased by his owner, Mr. Russell Grace, at the Trentliam yearling sales last year for 650gs. Having his first race on Saturday, this fine-looking colt ran very greenly throughout, but nevertheless was able to win in a canter by four lengths from such juvenile winners as Greenwich and Wildflower. Smoke Screen is to come to Auckland for the Foal Stakes on Boxing Day and he Will undoubtedly be a. most serious rival to Francis Drake.
