BOWLING TOURNEY.

CONTINUED TG-DAY

36 SUCCESSFUL YEST2RDAY.

NINETY-SIX ELIMINATED

The remaining, rounds in the sixth open singles tournament of the Auckland Bowling Centre were played yesterday afternoon, after the main edition of the "Star" went to press, and the complete results appear below.

The most striking feature in the section play yesterday wan the large number of ties, and these qualified to go forward Lo to-day's post-section play oil the same terms as those who won their sections outright, there being the record number of 30 of the 132 competitors entitled to continue to-day on the two-life system, that is to. say, until they suffer two lossas. Of course -it is theoretically possible for five of the six in a section to qualify, this taking place, if the five were to have three wins each, and the remaining player all losses, but this lias never yet happened. However, in one section yesterday, section F, at Onehunga, four of the six tied, and in section M, at Mount Eden, three tied, even this being quite unusual.

Eleven sections were won outright, eight players having five wins each, and three with four wins each, while in the remaining nine sections two tied with four wins each.

Probably tlie chief surprise yesterday was the ncivs from Remuera of the defeat of Frank Livingstone, the Dominion champion, and of Arthur Parsons, the winner of this tournament on four previous occasions. There was still more surprise when the "Star'' confirmed the messages telephoned round to the greens that each had suffered his first loss to Pitkethley, who has already made his mark in the soldiers' matches and other tourneys, but had been given about as much chance to will his section outright as the ipublic had given Wotan fcur Tuesdays earlier. George Deare and Maxwell Walker, two other Dominion champions, reached today's play safely by winning their last games yesterday, but the West End Dominion champions, C. K. Hardley and W. Bremner, as well as the present club champion, G. A. Wynyard, were relegated to the bank this time, quite an unusual experience. . . Neil Thomson, the present champion ot champions, maintained his reputation by winning a splendid game in the fifth round against W. A. Lancaster. It was so close that the only drive that 'the latter missed cost him the opportunity to appear again to-day instead of the "boy champion ot R A V good many new faces appeared to-day, there being no previous winners ot tliw competition, but there are three previous runners-up. viz., Thomson aforesa'd Duncan (Remuera) and L.
