SOCIAL GATHERING.
DISTINGUISHED GUESTS
The Auckland branch of the Royal Empire Society gave a reception last evening at the Lyceum Club in honour of the Alarquess of Hartington, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs, and Alarchioness of Hartington.
Exquisite blooms were used with artistry in the lounge, the huge spikes of deej) crimson and bright red gladioli being particularly colourful. Bowls of crimson and pink roses added another note of fragrance and colour.
On arrival the guests were received by Professor F. P. Worley, chairman of the council of the.Royal Empire Society, Mrs. Worley, and Lady Wijson. The former wore a gold lame, patterned in deep red roses. Lady Wilson chose a gown of black suede satin, relieved with steel trimming; Lady Hartington wore a trained gown of magnolia crepe suede, patterned in cerise and blue, and a sable wrap. The official party included: Miss Gertrude Drayton. C.8.E., general secretary of the Victoria. League, London, who wore a gown of hyacinth blue satin; Mrs. F. Jones, wife of the Hon. F. Jones, Minister of Defence, in dark raspberry satin; and Miss Isa Downie, daughter of the Hon. W. Downie, of Rhodesia, in biscuit figured ninon. Enjoyable ntimljers were rendered during the evening by Miss Winifred Hill, Mr. F. Baker, and violin solos by Mrs. F. Greenfield. Among those present were: Mrs. Eliot Davis, wearing black stiffened tulle and lace; Airs. John Alexander, Burgundy peau d'argo; Mrs. G. W. Hutchison, cream and gold brocade; Mrs. H. J.
