KEEPING THE PEACE.
THE LEAGUE'S AIR FORCE. Brian Tunstall's "Eagles Restrained (Allen and Unwin) is a story suggesting what the League's air force, if it were created, might be like 18 years hence. It centres in Martin Ferrers, a lieutenant in the force, and his exasperating and thrilling experiences as a liaison officer, along with others, on the outbreak of a dispute culminating in a struggle between Germany and Poland, which the League officials in Geneva set themselves to stop. Television is perfected, an<l is largely in use everywhere. In other directions, too, applied science lias made enormous strides.' At the League's offices we .come upon head*! of departments from almost every nation, and see how the work of the League is carried on. But we also see that both Germany and Poland try to put every possible obstacle in the way of tlic police force doing their work, and do not fear even to shoot at and bring down the 'planes in which they travel. There is, too, departmental red tape delaying and mismanaging things, quite as much as there is to-day. The scene shifts from place to place—from England, to Geneva, Warsaw, Danzig and the Polish Corridor. Then there is the inevitable quick-witted and astute lady who plays an important part in the story, and in comparison with whom Ferrers is slow and stupid. And there is their conventional and matter-of-fact engagement towards the end. It is all very ingenious, at times thrilling and at times amusing.
