CRICKET.

CITY AND SUBURBAN.

SEASON OPENS OCTOBER 31

CLAIM FOR HAWKE CUP STATUS

Mr. J. F. W. Dieksop presided at the first executive meeting of the Auckland City and Suburban Cuicket Association last night, when it was decided to commence the season on Saturday week. It was reported that the wickets at the Domain would be in order by that date.

The draw for the opening series of games ill the major competition is: Ponsonby v. Green Lane, Brixton v. Manukau. R.V. v. Roskill.

Strong pleas for promotion to full senior status, and an eight-team competition, were made by the Waterworks and Harbour Board delegates. Mr. Sid Learning (Manukau) drew attention to rule 10, which makes it incumbent upon senior clubs to enter at least one lower grade team. This settled the issue, as neither of the clubs in question had complied with this requirement.

While the Waterworks Club was prepared to consider finding another eleven, the Harbour Board representative could give no guarantee, but submitted that there should be some provision for promotion of any outstanding senior B team on the lines of the champion in that grade playing the team on the lowest rung of the major competition ladder. It was admitted that even this would present some difficulty, as two teams were bracketed winners of last year's senior B championship, Dilworth Old Boys and Harbour Board, the former of which, however, had not put forward a claim for promotion.

The following ten teams will, therefore, comprise the senior B for this season: New Lynn, Waterworks, I'apatoetoe, Green Lane, Harbour Board, Ponsonby, Roskill, Dilworth, Manukau, R.v .

Officers elected: Chairman, Mr. J. F. W. Dickson; secretary, Mr. E. Stallworthy; assistant secretary, Mr. J. Sail; treasurer, Mr. A. Riddell.

When the question of securing recognition .is a minor association so that a challenge can be entered for the Hawke Cup was discussed, the chairman said the New Zealand Cricket Council was responsible for the decision - that the Suburban Association was not considered a minor association according to the rules governing a challenge for the trophy. Messrs. E. Stallworthy and Dickson were appointed as a deputation to wait on the Auckland Association to discuss the matter. SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. UMPIRES FOR SATURDAY, MONDAY.
