ONEHUNGA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council was presided over last night by the deputy-Mayor, Mr. A. A. Coatcs. Council Meetings.—lt was decided that a meeting of the council once a month would be sufficient. The council . will therefore meet on the fourth Monday in each month instead of fortnightly as heretofore. The various sub-committees will meet regularly as usual and a special meeting of the council will be held at any time should the necessity arise. Borough Valuations. — The borough assessor, Mr. H. Campling, advised that although 200 objections had been lodged with the Assessment Court against the Government valuations only 16 objectors appeared in support of their claims. After the judge, Mr. J. L. Hewitt, had inspected the properties he decided to sustain all valuations. Veterans' Graves.—The engineer's estimate for the renovation of the veterans' graves at Waikaraka Cemetery was assessed at £95. This information is to be furnished to Miss E. M.' Statham, honorary inspector of soldiers' graves, in order that she may communicate with the Government as suggested by her when she interviewed the council, asking that the amount be donated to cover the cost of the necessary improvements. Drainage. — Those ratepayers whose premises have not been connected with the borough drainage system are to be notified that the work must" now be completed and the necessary connections made. Lime Kiln Site.—The lessee of the new lime kiln site asked that the _ existing arrangement be cancelled in consideration jof the payment by the council of £56 j and a refund of the rent already paid. This suggestion did not find favour with the council and the lessee is to be advised that the council is now in a position to complete the lease of the lime kiln site and had gone to considerable expense in preparing the roading and, further, that | owing to the fact that the operations of the kiln had been allowed to continue at ! Mount Smart Road the council was not prepared to refund the rent paid. The existing kiln must be closed down at the earliest possible moment. Tram Shelter. —The Mount Roskill Road Board, which first moved in the matter of getting a tram shelter erected at Royal Oak, where 6ix roads meet, is to be asked to arrange a conference with that end in view, when the council will be represented if due notice is given of the date c *>he conference.

Unemployment Loan. —The repayment of the balance of the unemployment loan of £1500 is to be met out of the district fund instead of raising a special loan for the purpose. Mr. Jordan's Thanks.—A letter was read from Mr. W. J. Jordan, High Commissioner in London, thanking the electors of Manukau for the farewell which was '.endered to him ana Mrs. Jordan in July last.
